The XI Tampere Club Meeting 10-12 September 2012
Professor Geoffrey Brennan talked about "How to Explain the Welfare State and why the Explanation Matters"
The theme of the Club is "Challenges of Welfare State". In parallel with the meeting, a special seminar is organized with the same title. Distinguished members of the Tampere Club, top level guest lecturers as well as Finnish scientists, politicians and business-life representatori will attend the seminar. The key note speaker is Professor Torben Andersen (Aarhuus) and Guest lecturers are Joakim Palme (Upsala, Sweden) and Jorma Sipilä (Tampere).
The seminar and the annual meeting will be held at the Tampere hall.
The XI Tampere Lecture
The IX Tampere Lecture was held by Professor Sixten Korkman on Monday 10th September at the Tampere Hall. The topic of the lecture was: Pohjoismainen hyvinvointivaltio ja euroalueen velkakriisi ("The Nordic Welfare State and the Euro Area Debt Crisis"). The lecture will be availeble through this website soon.
President of the Tampere Club Awarded
The President of the Tampere Club, Professor Ernesto Garzón Valdés received the City of Tampere's I class medal of honor. The medal was handed by the Mayor of Tampere.
The X Tampere Lecture
The historical 10th Tampere Club was given by the President of the Tampere Club, Professor Ernesto Garzón Valdés. The topic of the lecture was "Georg Henrik von Wright and Body / Mind Problem". The jubileum Tampere lecture was organized in co-operation with SOFY, Philosophical Society of Finland, the Uni Helsinki's Faculty of Law, and the Helsinki Collegium of Advanced Studies.
Changes in the Club's Organisation
The Annual Meeting of the Tampere Club decided to revise the Club's organisation. Professor Ruth Zimmerling is now Vice President and Professor José Luis Martí Secretary of International Relations. Please visit here to view the complete organisation of the Club.
The Jubileum Seminar
The Tampere Club organised a Jubileum Seminar to celebrate the Clubs 10th anniversary. The main speaker was Advocate General at the European Court of Justice, Dr. Niilo Jääskinen. Other esteemed speakers were Professor Jose Luís Martí and President Pekka Hallberg. The seminar was held on 7 September 2011 at the Tampere Hall.

The Club's 10th Annual Meeting on "Democracy and Law" is held 7 - 9 September 2011 and the venue is the Tampere Hall. Professors Geoffrey Brennan and Aulis Aarnio will open the sessions.
A book by proferssors Martí and Pettit ranked high
Highly Valued UK based Political Studies Guide, The New Statesman, has picked five of the best political and economics books of the past year. One of them is "A political Philosophy in Public Life: Civic Republicanism in Zapatero's Spain" by two members of the Tampere Club, Professor Jose Luis Martí and Professor Philip Pettit. The Club is proud to gongratulate the highly valued authors for this outstanding achievement.

The Argumenta Evaluation Seminar on 4 - 5 March 2011
The Evaluation Seminar was held at the Tampere Hall on 4 - 5 March 2011.
The IX Tampere Lecture
was held by Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Mr. Sauli Niinistö on Wednesday 1 September 2010 at the Tampere Hall. The lecture will be published on the 4th volume in the Tampere Club Series (Tampere University Press).
Elinor Ostrom Won the Nobel Prize for Economics
The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was awarded to member of the Tampere Club,
Professor Elinor Ostrom "for her analysis of economics, governance and especially commons".
Professor Ostrom was the first woman to win the Prize.
Professor Ostrom is the 4th Member of the Tampere Club to win a Nobel Prize. The 1st Laureate in Economics (1986) was the Honorary President of the Club, Professor James M. Buchanan. The second member who won the Nobel Prize, also in economics in 2005, was Professor Thomas C. Schelling. The 3rd member of the Club was President Martti Ahtisaari who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
The Tampere Round Table: IX Tampere Club Meeting
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 31 August - Wednesday 1 September 2010 at the
Tampere Hall. The General theme of the Meeting is Democracy and Ignorance. The presentations to support the discussions will be made by two members of the Tampere Club. More details anounced later.
The meeting will be followed by the Closing Seminar of the Tampere Club's Argumenta Seminar on 2 - 3 September 2010.

Professor Hardin held the VIII Tampere Lecture on
9 September 2009. The topic was "Corporatist Democracy".

The meeting took place on 8 - 9 September 2009 at the
Tampere Hall. The General theme of the Meeting was Democracy and Security. The presentations to support the discussions were made by Vice President of the Tampere Club, Professor Geoffrey Brennan (Australian National University) and Professor Ruth Zimmerling (University of Mainz).
The meeting was followed by the Opening Seminar on the Tampere Club's Argumenta Seminar.
The Tampere Club received a significant funding from the
Finnish Cultural Foundations Argumenta funding.
The Tampere Club's Argumenta-project aims
to produce new openings in the dialogue of democracy and
